How We Scope a Project

Every job starts the same way — understanding what's under the floor and how the space gets used. The right product and installation method fall out of those two answers, and they're different for a basement, a commercial kitchen, and a rental unit.

1

Measure and inspect the subfloor

We record square footage, check flatness with a straightedge, and test for moisture. On concrete we look for cracks and signs of hydrostatic pressure; on wood we check for deflection and squeaks. This is what determines whether prep is simple or a project of its own.

2

Confirm what's coming out

Old carpet, glued-down vinyl, tile, or multiple layers stacked over the years. Some removals take an hour, others need grinding. Knowing up front keeps the estimate honest rather than adding surprise charges mid-job.

3

Match product to the space

Kitchens and basements need a waterproof rigid core. High-traffic commercial areas need a thicker wear layer, usually glue-down. Bedrooms can use a budget-friendly laminate. We recommend based on where the floor actually lives, not on selling the most expensive option.

4

Quote with the scope written out

You get a written estimate listing removal, preparation, materials, installation, trim, and disposal as separate lines. If something changes once we open up the floor, we discuss it before doing the work.

Why preparation gets its own line item

Flooring failures are almost never the plank's fault. They're adhesive releasing from a dusty slab, seams telegraphing through from debris left underneath, or a low spot that rocks a floating floor until the locking system gives out. Proper prep costs money on the estimate and is the reason a floor is still flat in ten years. There's more detail in our guide to subfloor preparation.
